The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met.

This position performs responsible work in support of Family Services staff involving a variety of office and client service assignments; does related work as required.
Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision of a Supervisor or Lead Worker, within one functional area, and of a routine nature.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties Depending on assignment, transports and escorts children and/or family members to appointments; assists Family Services staff in transporting children to and from placements.
Responds to inquiries and provides routine information regarding unit programs and services, refers clients to appropriate programs or resources and/or assists clients with various applications and determining eligibility, and completes related documentation including entering information in to the Child Welfare Case Management database, OASIS and/or other relevant databases.
May provide education and assistance to families in navigating the child welfare, educational, and other systems as needed.
May help families identify formal an informal community resources and supports.
Depending on assignment, monitors court ordered supervised visits between children and their parents or families; provides feedback to family services staff as appropriate.
Depending on assignment, assists Family Services Specialists in requesting medical records and other case records in preparation for adoption finalization.
May determine eligibility for services and assist with client applications, financial assistance eligibility and reporting.
Performs a variety of regular office clerical functions in support of unit activities.
Depending on assignment, completes file redactions for adoption finalizations and CPS appeals.
Handles division support functions such as equipment maintenance, inventory, stocking, and ordering family-services specific supplies such as car seats.
Depending on assignment, may be asked to work during emergency operations as outlined in the Social Services Department continuity of operations plan.
Performs other related tasks as needed.
Education, Experience and Skills Minimum Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Possession of a valid, appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

Direct experience working with children preferred.
Skills:
General knowledge of the programs and related rules, regulations and procedures of the unit to which assigned; general knowledge of modern office practices; some knowledge of human behavior; some knowledge of the current social, economic and health problems of the community served; ability to communicate effectively and establish working relationships with clients, department staff, and community partners; ability to maintain detailed records; skill in the use of an automobile.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information Standard office environment.
Work occurs in an office setting and in vehicles with long periods of sitting.
Work may also occur in client homes, meetings, and in other community agencies.
Frequent contacts with individuals, families, extended families and other stakeholders, other professionals and paraprofessionals requiring skill and tact in dealing with sensitive, controversial and confidential material.
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as traffic hazards, violent individuals, loud noises, or rude/irate customers.
A pre-hire background check will be conducted on all candidates who are selected for employment with the Department of Social Services.
It will include a criminal record check and a child abuse/neglect registry search.
Additionally, a driving record check and education verification may be conducted if applicable.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
